The threat of tornadoes hovers over central North Carolina today, just weeks after twisters killed two people in Johnston and Wilson counties.
TODAY
As a line of heavy showers and thunderstorms rolls through the Triangle, the chance for tornadoes will be greatest from 3 p.m. to midnight, when a second system tracks through the region, according to Jeff Orrock, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Raleigh. The area is also under a flash-flood watch. The Triangle is likely to get an inch of rain, with storms dumping two to three inches in spots.
BE INFORMED
Monitor local media for the latest weather reports until the threat passes. Also, $30 NOAA weather radios can be purchased from retailers such as Best Buy and Radio Shack.
KNOW THE DIFFERENCE
A tornado watch means conditions are right for a tornado to form. A warning means a tornado has possibly been sighted in the area.
WHAT TO DO
If a tornado warning is issued in your area, take cover in a room without windows, Orrock said.
THE WEEKEND
Today's rain will give way Friday to cooler, drier weather with highs in the 40s. The weekend is expected to remain dry, with highs in the 40s on Saturday and the 50s on Sunday.
