Weekend road work will force an I-40 / Beltline detour

Repaving work on the southern Beltline this weekend will close lanes and send some drivers on a detour.

The state Department of Transportation will close the exit ramp from westbound Interstate 40 to the eastbound I-440 Outer Beltline from 9 p.m. tonight to 5 a.m. Monday.

A marked detour will send driverswest to the Rock Quarry Road exit, where they will be directed to loop back onto the eastbound lanes of the Outer Beltline. Also this weekend, the Outer Beltline will be reduced to one lane from Rock Quarry to Poole Road.

Work on Beltline to close three lanes

Resurfacing work at the southeast corner of Raleigh's Interstate 440 Beltline will close three of four lanes this weekend for Outer Beltline traffic between Interstate 40 (Exit 300) and Poole Road (Exit 15).

That means slow going for drivers heading counterclockwise. It's marked as westbound I-440, but cars traveling this part of the loop actually are pointing northeast.

The state Department of Transportation said the lanes will be closed through the weekend until 5 a.m. Monday, weather permitting.

Weekend work will squeeze 440 Outer Beltline flow in southeast Raleigh

That means slow going for drivers heading in the counter-clockwise direction. It's marked as westbound I-440, but cars traveling this part of the loop actually are pointing to the northeast.

The lanes will be closed between 9 p.m. tonight and 5 a.m. Monday. Also, the Outer Beltline on-ramp from westbound I-40 will close intermittently during the weekend.

Redesigned Beltline signs to drop 'Inner' and 'Outer'

No more "Inner" and "Outer" for Raleigh's Beltline. Soon it will be Interstate 40 and Interstate 440, east and west.

The state Department of Transportation is about to make good on a long-standing promise to get rid of the Inner Beltline and Outer Beltline signs that get lots of motorists mad, confused and lost.

A $1 million DOT sign contract to be awarded this fall will give Beltline drivers a new sense of direction.

Widening begins on I-40 bottleneck

Work is starting on a project to open up the Triangle's worst rush-hour bottleneck -- Interstate 40 in West Raleigh -- and to remove the often-confusing "Inner" and "Outer" Beltline signs.

I-40, which is four lanes wide between Wade Avenue and U.S. 1/64 in Cary, will get 50 percent fatter as two new lanes are carved out of the wide, grassy median. Most construction will take place at night, and no lanes will be closed during the day.

Extra work to be performed at the same time will prepare the way for the six-lane freeway's inevitable expansion, years from now, to eight lanes. The N.C. Department of Transportation says it doesn't have enough money for the full eight-lane treatment now.
