Galen Thomas Starnes, 29, passed away Tuesday, August 26th at home in Chapel Hill, NC. Born February 16th, 1985 on Jo Mac Rd, he lived in the Chapel Hill area but also resided for a few years in Asheville, NC. Galen graduated from Chapel Hill High School, completed a culinary studies certificate at Durham Tech, attended AB Tech in Culinary Studies, and graduated from The Center for Massage in Weaverville, NC in 2008. An avid roller blader for 11 years, he loved to skate mastering tricks. Galen was a man of many gifts-he loved to share his cooking passion with his friends and family. He was adept at massage, wrote beautiful, impassioned poetry as well as a children’s book, and loved music. Galen was a highly sociable person with a cadre of many friends. He loved his family and was a wonderful uncle to his niece and 3 nephews. All will miss his loving, philosophical, funny, out-of-the box, sweet presence.
He is survived by his mother, Suzy Lawrence, his father, Tom Starnes, his older brother, Colin Starnes and his wife Jessica and their children – Ginevieve, Finnegan, Ezra and Beaux Starnes, all of Chapel Hill. Surviving relatives include aunts, Bobbie Wells, Julie Daniels, Patricia Starnes and Janet Starnes, grandparents, Earl and Dorothy Jean Starnes, great aunts Eleanor Smith and Joann Bulluck, as well as many cousins.
A memorial service will be held at the home of his mother at 1925 Jo Mac Road, Chapel Hill, NC 27516 on Saturday, September 6th at 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honor to Suzy Lawrence for college trust funds for Galen’s niece and nephews.
