Former Chapel Hillian and Croasdaile Village resident, Claire moved to Durham from Falmouth, MA in 2009 with her husband Ted Lockwood (deceased, father of Steve, father-in-law of Jayne Stuart Lockwood). In the days before her death on August 31, she spoke of her wonderful life in Chapel Hill in the 1960s and 70s, a town she adored for its people and progressive politics. Claire, former husband Sam Hill, and children were members of Binkley Baptist Church and Claire taught Spanish at NCCU. She was a radiant beauty inside and out, completely without selfishness or vanity. Her passions were social justice, religious studies, current events, singing, and friends. Widely admired for her gracious ways, she will be missed by family including daughter Sarah Hill (Durham), son Charles Hill (Asheville), brother Robert Cohen and wife Zane Cohen (Lexington, KY), cousins especially Cheryl, nieces, a nephew, and wonderful friends especially Anne Jarman and Michael Hamilton. Her Durham community in recent years was rich with SCHC Companions, Hamilton Hill friends, Croasdaile neighbors, St. Phillip's community, Ann, Julie, Linda, Jim, David, Lauren, and the Amazing Maryellen. Two days before her death after being in declining health for a year or more and in bed for several weeks, Claire said quietly but brightly to her daughter, “It’s been a perfect day.” That was Claire, and so it goes.
Gifts in Claire’s name can be made to Music in My Mind (must designate this program) at Durham Center for Senior Life by check (DCSL, 406 Rigsbee Avenue, Durham, NC 27701) or online at www.dcslnc.org
