Betty Brown Denny Shook died Sunday, September 14, 2014.
Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, September 18, at 11:00 a.m. at Calvary Episcopal Church with the Rev. Jane Rogers Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in the Calvary Episcopal Church Churchyard.
Betty was born January 7, 1926, in Gastonia, the daughter of Justice and Mrs. Emery B. Denny. When Betty was 15 years old, the family moved to Raleigh where she later graduated from Needham B. Broughton High School. Betty graduated from the Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina and received her master’s degree in education from Duke University. Betty had a special love for children and taught second grade in Raleigh and Tarboro for a total of 32 years. On October 23, 1965, she married Lenior Gwyn “Bud” Shook of Tarboro, where they spent the rest of their lives.
Betty was an avid bridge player and reader. She enjoyed her book club and was a loyal member of Calvary Episcopal Church.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Bud; brother, Emery B. Denny, Jr., and sister, Sarah Denny Williamson. She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Wallace Ashley of Smithfield; loving caretaker and special friend, James Arnold of Tarboro; nieces and nephews and their spouses and children; and many cousins in North Carolina and Alabama, all of whom called her “Aunt Bet.”
