Carlos Miguel Diaz, 62, of Cary, NC passed away on September 12, 2014 after a hard fought battle with pancreatic cancer.
He was born December 20, 1951 in Ponce, Puerto Rico to the late Monserrate Colón Diaz and Miguel Diaz Borrero. He grew up in the Bronx, New York and joined the Army after graduating from Alfred E. Smith High School. He married Jeanne Nissen on March 11, 1977 in El Paso, Texas.
Carlos served a tour in South Korea, two tours in Germany, and deployed to the Persian Gulf during Operation Desert Storm. He retired from the Army in March 1993 after 21 years of service. He then completed his associates degree in Diesel and Heavy Equipment Technology at Wake Technical Community College and began a second career in this field. He worked as a heavy equipment mechanic at United Rentals in Raleigh, NC since 2001. He enjoyed repairing equipment, fixing up bicycles for his children and grandchildren, and treasure hunting at the NC State Flea Market on the weekends. Carlos had an excellent sense of humor and incredible knack for baby whispering for which he will be fondly remembered.
Carlos is survived by his wife Jeanne Diaz, of Cary, NC; five children: Bonnie Bardwell and husband Joshua, of Raleigh, NC; Carlos Michael Diaz and wife Hollie, of Salisbury, NC; Rebecca Romano and husband Michael, of Martinez, CA; Christina Diaz, of Framingham, MA; and David Diaz, of Raleigh, NC; and nine grandchildren: Thomas, Joseph, Andrew, and Harrison of Raleigh, NC and Malena, Katherine, Meredith, Caroline, and Charlotte of Salisbury, NC. He is also survived by his sisters Milagros Diaz Acosta of Bronx, NY and Amelia Diaz of Allentown, PA and brothers Braulio Diaz of Bronx, NY, Edwin Garcia of Ponce, PR and Ramon Diaz of Houston, TX.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday September 19, 2014 at First United Methodist Church of Cary. 117 South Academy Street, Cary, NC 27511.
