Weldon "Sam" Bass died Saturday, September 13 at Watauga Medical Center. Born July 24, 1932 to Mae and Wiley Bass, he was a faithful husband, loving father and grandfather, brother, uncle and inspiration to anyone who knew him.
An ardent Wolfpack supporter, Weldon was a North Carolina State University graduate and Registered Professional Engineer. He was a brother of Sigma Nu Fraternity with his legacy carried on by his son. He served his country in the U.S. Navy.
A native of Harnett county, he spent most of his life in Durham as an employee of GTE, later Verizon.
Left to honor his memory are his wife Jane and daughter Melissa Nanney, both of Boone; daughter Susan Slavin (Christopher) of Valrico, FL; son Stephen Bass of Swannanoa; grandchildren Sophia and Addison Slavin, Ashley Grant (Brett), David Nanney and great-granddaughter, Daphne Grant. Sisters Christine Heath of Durham and Aline Roberson of Wake Forest survive as well as many nieces and nephews he loved as his own children. Weldon was predeceased by his brother, Wiley Bass, Jr.

A celebration of life will be held September 27, 1pm at Pleasant Green United Methodist Church in Durham.
