A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 11 at 3 p.m. at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Hillsborough, NC. The family will receive friends at the church following the service.
Donald was born on June 14, 1931. A native of Orange County, he was predeceased by his parents, Clem Merritt and Ethel Lloyd Cheek, and a sister, Mary Lee Pollok. He is survived by his wife, Thelma Browning Cheek; two sons and their wives, Jeff and Nora Cheek and Marc and Jane Cheek; three granddaughters, Kerry, Emma and Elizabeth Cheek; canine companion, Kara; and three siblings, Leonard Cheek, Margaret (Charlie) Miller and John (Pat) Cheek.
After graduating from Hillsboro High School in 1950, he served four years in the U.S. Navy. He embarked on a career in hospital administration that would span over 35 years and include positions at Duke, Charlotte-Mecklenburg, and Florence (SC) General hospitals.
Never miss a local story.
In retirement, he spent many hours maintaining his yard, a plot of land originally part of his family's dairy farm. His days were full of gardening and taking walks through the fields and woods surrounding his home. For 14 years he enjoyed working with his sister and brother-in-law making goat-milk soap. His interests included music, crossword puzzles, family history and sports. He possessed a keen sense of humor that many might recall as his most distinguishing feature. He was a good and honest man, and will be missed.
The family wishes to express our gratitude to the caregivers from Duke Home Care and Hospice.
