Robert Jenkins Carroll, 90, of 1046 NC 37 North, Gates, NC, died Friday, September 26, 2014 in Sentara Albemarle Medical Center, Elizabeth City.
Mr. Carroll was born in Suffolk, VA on May 5, 1924, and was the son of the late John Edwards and Jennie Cross Carroll. A 1950 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he had retired after 46 years as the owner and operator of Carroll’s Garage in Gates. A member of Kittrell’s United Methodist Church, he served as long-time treasurer, youth Sunday School Teacher and several other capacities. He also enjoyed membership in the Gates Volunteer Fire Department, Gates Ruritan Club, Gates Couples Club, and Ducks Unlimited. Robert served on the Board of Directors of Southern Bank for 47 years and on the Regional UNC-CH Morehead Scholarship Committee. A veteran, he served in the US Army during World War II in the Fifth Division of General Patton’s Third Army. An avid sports enthusiast, Robert was a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, UNC Tarheels, Duke basketball, and ECU football. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Jack Carroll.
Surviving are his wife of nearly 69 years, Ada Willey Carroll; two daughters, Rebecca S. Carroll of New York and Laura Carroll Allen and husband Scott of Pine Knoll Shores; two sons, Robert E. Carroll and wife Rosalind of Raleigh and Stephen W. Carroll of Gates; and three grandchildren, Louis Feuillatte, Wistar and Emily Allen.
A celebration of his life will be held Sunday, September 28, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. in Kittrell’s United Methodist Church by the Rev. Mike Askew. Friends may join the family in the social hall immediately following the church service. Burial will follow in the Willey Family Cemetery with Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main Street, Gatesville, handling arrangements.
