Rev. A. Gerald McKay, 81, was called home to be with his Lord and Savior whom he so faithfully served, on Sunday, Sept. 28, 2014.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 PM on Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2014, at Peniel Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be today
(Tuesday, Sept 30) from 6 to 8:00 p.m. at Layton-Anderson Funeral Home in Florence, South Carolina.
Mr. McKay was born in Timmonsville, South Carolina, the son of the late Archie Jacob and Mary Alexander McKay. He was a graduate of Campbell University and Southeastern Baptist Seminary. Reverend McKay was ordained into the ministry in 1966 at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Florence, SC. His pastoral calling took him and his family to several churches during his tenure as a Southern Baptist Minister. He served at Hebron Baptist Church in the Friendfield Community, SC; Eastside Baptist Church in McColl, SC; Neill’s Creek Baptist Church in Angier, NC; Highland Baptist Church in New London, NC, and Johnsonville Baptist Church in Johnsonville, SC. Upon his retirement, Reverend McKay served as a board member of the American Red Cross. He recently received his 30-year-pin as a member of the Lions Club. Mr. McKay also worked as a volunteer with AARP, teaching safe driving classes for many years. His greatest legacy, however, was his love for his Savior which he faithfully passed on to his children and his children’s children.

Surviving are his wife of 62 ½ years, Frances Hill McKay, Timmonsville; two sons, Tony (Candace) McKay, Garner, NC, Trent (Deborah) McKay, Apex, NC; two daughters, Hope (Steve) Crowell, Pfafftown, NC, Audrey (Carl) Broggi, Seabrook, SC. Mr. McKay is also survived by fifteen grandchildren, Penny (Shay) Hayes, Christy (Michael) Lewis, Alexander McKay, Zachary McKay, Caroline M. (Erik) Zilli, Jonathan (Cassia) McKay, Stephie (Josh) Crews, Jacie (Jarod) Latch, Seth Crowell, Josh Crowell, Jeremy (Chesed) Broggi, Jordan (Maureen) Broggi, GraceAnna (Grant) Castleberry, Grant Broggi, Jameson Broggi, and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn McKay Wall.
