Cecil L. Sherrod, 86, of 1750 Piney Grove Church Road, Kenly,NC passed away on September 28, 2014 after a two year battle with injuries from a traumatic brain injury. He was surrounded by family at his HomeGoing.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, and friend. He loved his family and was always willing to lend a helpful hand in the community. He enjoyed working on the strawberry farm and sharing vegetables with his friends while he was able to garden.
Mr. Sherrod was born on May 11, 1928 in Nash County; he grew up in Nash and Wilson Counties and was a graduate of Rock Ridge High School.
Mr. Sherrod was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War and a recipient of the Purple Heart and Combat Infantry Badge. Prior to his Korean War deployment, he served in the 3rd Infantry Regiment, “The Old Guard”, in Washington, DC. He served as an active member of the Pine Level American Legion Post for many years.

He enjoyed singing and listening to gospel music. He was a long time member of Piney Grove Original Free Will Baptist Church in Kenly,where he sang in the choir, provided special music, and served as a greeter and deacon. He enjoyed singing with a community gospel group in Johnston County.
Mr. Sherrod worked over 25 years for the News and Observer in Raleigh as a printer and type setter and kept found memories of his workmanship setting ads and using his line gage.
Brother Cecil was the oldest active member of the Kenly Masonic Lodge #257 and wasalways the highest seller of BBQ chicken plates for scholarship fund raisers.
Mr. Sherrod was an avid outdoorsman and spent countless hours outside hunting and fishing with his son Tom.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Zelphia Wilson Sherrod, parents Lonnie and Jennie Lamm Sherrod of Rock Ridge, brother, Harold V. Sherrod of Sims, and special friend, Edith Davis of Kenly. He is survived by three sons, Rusty Sherrod of Elkin, Tom Sherrod of the home, and Ted and wife Janet Bass Sherrod of Kenly. Four grandchildren, Megan Sherrod Skinner and husband Corey of Winterville, Josh Sherrod of Clermont Ferrand, France, Erica Sherrod Stepps and David of Grifton, Allison Sherrod of Cary, and two great granddaughters, Harper and Henley; Sisters Bertha Jean Talbot of Rocky Mount and Lucille Joan Stallings, and husband Billy of Tarboro; Sisters- in- law Thelma Sherrod of Sims, and Mavis Wilson Stott and husband Kenny of Raleigh.

The Funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 1, 2014 at the Minshew-Coley Funeral Home in Kenly with Rev. Richie Cuddington officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday evening, Sept., 30th, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. for a time of Visitation.
Interment with Masonic Rites and Military Honors will occur at Evergreen Cemetery in Wilson, NC immediately following the Chapel service on Wed. Oct. 1.
