William “Bill” Brooks Thayer died peacefully on October 4, 2014 at Carillon Assisted Living Center. Bill was born in Columbia, SC on February 8, 1930 to the late Earnest R. Thayer and Harriett M. Thayer. At an early age the family moved to Spartanburg, SC where Bill attended school. After graduation from Spartanburg High in 1947 Bill entered Clemson College. He received a degree in Ag. Eng from Clemson in 1952 and entered the US Air Force the same year. He served for two years reaching a rank of 1st. Lt. as an air police officer. After the Air Force he was employed as an Ag. Eng. with the Soil Conservation Service in Greensboro, NC and he served in various positions with SCS in NC until he retired in Raleigh as an Area Eng. in 1985.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday, October 8, 2014 at Montlawn Memorial Park, Raleigh.
Bill was a loyal supporter of Clemson. He loved to golf, talk on the short wave radio, and ski, hike, and build and fly remote control airplanes with his son, David.
In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Moore Thayer, his son, William David Thayer, his brother, Durward Thayer, and his sister, Theodora Thayer.
