Iola Leora Warren was born in Fergus Falls, MN, on October 15, 1917, to Dorothy Katherine Farness Warren and Harvey Warren. Iola married Ovid Burrell in 1938, and they had two daughters. She loved learning and was a voracious reader, so when her children were in grade school she enrolled in General Beadle College, now Dakota State University, in Madison, SD. She graduated with honors with a two-year degree in elementary education. In 1954 she began her teaching career in a first grade classroom in Mitchell, SD. In 1959 she moved to Denver, CO, where she completed her BS and MS degrees at the University of Denver while teaching in the Denver Public Schools.
In 1965 Iola married John B. Haliw, and they moved to Oahu, Hawaii. where Iola taught in the Hawaii Public Schools until retirement in 1981. Before and after her retirement she spent her summers traveling and tutoring ESL students, and students in the Hawaii Literacy Program. In 2005 her health forced her to leave her beloved Hawaii to live with her daughter, Bethany, and her husband, Carl Meyer, in Raleigh, NC, where she remained until her death. Her spirit was indomitable, and no matter the challenge her retort was always “Let me try.”
Iola was predeceased by her parents and her siblings Bess Warren, Donald Warren, and Violet Warren and her husband, John. Left to remember her with love are daughters Connie Burrell Coldiron Studer and husband Gary; Bethany Burrell Meyer, and husband Carl; stepdaughter Janice Haliw Gebhard, husband Hans and children; Kathy Jo Coldiron McNamara, husband Daniel, and children Connie Marie, Michael, and James McNamara; Bradley Coldiron and son Connor; Martin Meyer, wife Leigh, and daughter Margaret Meyer Harding and husband Graham; Holly Meyer Kenney and husband Sean, and children Allison and Ryan.
