Margery Newton Farmer, Jr., age 77, passed away peacefully, on October 4, 2014.
Mrs. Farmer, originally of Wilson, NC, first moved to Durham in 1955 to attend Duke University as an Angier B. Duke scholar. At Duke, she received both her AB and her Master of Arts in Teaching degrees. There she also met her future husband, Joseph C. Farmer, Jr. They married in Duke Chapel in 1957 and had been married almost 57 years at the time of his death in March, 2014.
She worked professionally in public and mental health fields, was a member of the Junior League of Durham and Orange Counties, and was a communicant of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. Most importantly, she will be remembered by her family and many friends for her hospitality and generosity, her intelligence and sense of humor, and her loyal friendship.
She is survived by her son Tom, daughter-in-law Shauna, three granddaughters Suzanne, Catherine, and Elizabeth, and sister Linda (Newton) Rowe. She was preceded in death by her parents Thomas and Margaret (Richardson) Newton, her sister Barbara (Newton) Looper, her husband Joseph C. Farmer, Jr, MD, and her oldest son Joseph Farmer III.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 11, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Durham, NC.
