Alethia Etheridge Brickhouse Jones, age 90, died October 7, 2014 at her family home outside Columbia, NC.
Alethia was born January 30, 1924 to the late Annie Copeland Etheridge and Jesse Morgan Etheridge in the Sound Side Community of Tyrrell County. Know as “Lee” to her family and friends, she was a member of Sound Side Free Will Baptist Church. Lee attended Nashville Free Will Baptist Bible College in Nashville, TN, earning an Associates Degree. After graduation, she worked for a number of years for the Free Will Baptist Denomination doing Christian Education. This led her to the NC Public School System, teaching in Tyrrell County until she married and moved to Greenville, NC.
At that time, she earned her BA in Education from Atlantic Christian College (now Barton College), in Wilson, NC. Lee found that teaching was her vocation, and she devoted herself to her students and their success in her classroom. During her career she taught in several school systems in North Carolina—in addition to Tyrrell County Schools (1947 -1949 and 1974-1976), Lee also taught in the Greenville/Pitt County Schools (1949-1964 and 1976 -1981) and Charlotte/Mecklenburg Schools (1964-1974). She retired in 1981.
During her years as a teacher, Lee was honored to be named to Outstanding Elementary Teachers of America in 1973. In addition she was invited to join Alpha Delta Kappa, a professional teachers’ sorority for outstanding teachers. Lee was a charter member of the Pitt County chapter of ADK, and that chapter’s first president.
After retirement, Lee was very busy with tutoring students for a few years, travel, church activities, and family activities. Nothing pleased her more than large family gatherings with lots of food, laughter, and fellowship.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Bennie M. Brickhouse (d. 1980), and Sam Marvin Jones, Sr. (d. 2009); her sisters, Kathleen Etheridge Swain and Polly Etheridge Oliver; her brother Jesse Alan Etheridge; and, her step son Charles L. Jones.
Surviving are her daughter, Angela Lee Brickhouse of the home; step-daughter M. Cheryl Jones of Chesapeake, VA; step-son Sam Marvin Jones, Jr., and wife Nancy of Moyock, NC; Sister Gladys Etheridge Thomas of Norfolk, Va; grandsons Sam Marvin Jones, III of Moyock, NC, and C. Tom Jones and wife, Nancie Carol, of Chesapeake, VA; and 5 great-grandchildren--Mattie Grace and Dorian Jones; Samantha, Abby and Noah Jones; her much loved nieces, nephews; and special cousin, Lydia S. Brickhouse and her family of Columbia, NC.
