Josephine “Jo” Freeman Overby, age 101, was called home to be with her Lord on Saturday, October 4, 2014. She was born on May 9, 1913 in Nash County, North Carolina and moved to Newport News, VA in August 1945.
Jo was a member of Temple Baptist Church. She enjoyed sewing and crafts when she was younger, and loved her flowers and yard work to include cutting her grass with a push mower. At age 99 she decided she could not cut her grass anymore, to her sorrow. The last one and a half years she lived at the Hidenwood Retirement Community but always wanted to go back home so she could cut grass and rake leaves.
She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter Joyce Carlton (Wayne) of Yorktown, VA; granddaughter Deborah Riley (Daniel) of Quinby, VA; grandson Mark Carlton (Debra) of Poquoson, VA; two great-granddaughters, Brittany and Amber Carlton; one sister Alice Williams of Hampton, VA; sister-in-law Rachel Lynn Freeman; many nieces and nephews in North Carolina; and all of her many wonderful friends including two very special friends, Maggie Kemp and Jennifer Osborn. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Edward H. Overby, her parents, three brothers and one sister all of North Carolina.
Visitation will be from 11 to 12 Noon on Monday, October 13, 2014 at W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 12:00 Noon with Rev. Franklin Hall officiating. Burial will be in Peninsula Memorial Park, Newport News, VA.
