Morris A. Shiffman passed away at Croasdaile Village Retirement Community on Monday, October 6, 2014 at the age of 91. He died peacefully in his sleep.
Morris was born in the Bronx, New York on October 12, 1922 to the late Abraham and Sarah (Lando) Shiffman. He married his beloved wife, Sophie Shielman in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1950 and was the father of two children, Lili and Alan who loved him very much.
Morris attended City College and then completed coursework for a degree in Veterinary Medicine at Middlesex University in Waltham, Massachusetts. He briefly served in World War II in the Navy. Upon his return, he got a masters in Public Health from the University of Michigan. From 1946-7 heworked for UNRRA, assisting in post-war reconstruction by transporting livestock from the Middle East and South Africa to Europe. In 1949, he received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Paris. After returning to the United States, Morris took a job as Chief of Milk, Food and Drug Sanitation for the city of Milwaukee and then worked in Philadelphia in the same capacity. While working, he completed a Masters Degree and a PhD in Governmental Administration from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
In 1964, Morris and his family moved to Chapel Hill and he began a long and illustrious teaching and consulting career at the School of Public Health at The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He was a charismatic educator and influenced scores of young public health students. At this time he also consulted for numerous international organizations including the World Health Organization and the Agency for International Development. His consulting work took him all over the world with significant projects in Africa and Central and South America. He retired from the University in 1992.
Morris was a gentle man with a wonderful sense of humor. A loving family man and friend to many, he is survived by his wife, Sophie (nee Shielman); son, Alan Shiffman of Durham, NC; daughter, Lili (Shiffman) Arkin and her husband, Jonathan Arkin of Millburn, NJ; grandchild, Claire Arkin of Queens, NY; Niece, Toba Gang Lazor of Apple Valley MN; Nephews, David Gang (Nancy) of Stanhope NJ and Edward (Penny) Gang of Rolling Meadows IL. He was proceeded in death by his sister, Freda Gang.

Graveside funeral services will be held October 10, at 1:00 PM at Judea Reform Congregation Cemetary, 2560 Jones Ferry Rd. Chapel Hill NC, near the intersection with Damascus Church Rd. There will be a memorial service Sunday, October 12 at 2:00 PM in the chapel at Croasdaile Farm Retirement Community, 2600 Croasdaile Farm Parkway, Durham NC.
