Sam Henderson Parkerson, Jr., age 70, passed away at his home in Wilmington, NC, on Wednesday, October 22, 2014 after a long battle of Chronic Pulmonary Disease.
Born January 16, 1944, in New Orleans, Louisiana to Marye Hodge and Sam Henderson Parkerson, he was raised along with his Sister Marilyn and his Brother Russell in Metarie, Louisiana. The family later lived on the campus of All Saints in Vicksburg, Mississippi where his father was employed as an Administrator. Sam graduated from East Jefferson High School and went on to attend South Eastern Louisiana and Mississippi State.
Sam left the South when he joined the United States Navy, serving his country honorably for 23 years and most notably Sam was a Vietnam War Veteran. After returning to the states, he placed residence in Chapel Hill, North Carolina where he met his wife Betty Jane Warner. They were introduced to each other at an intimate dinner party that sparked a relationship and marriage of 41 years, having only courted for three months before matrimony. In 1977, they moved to Raleigh, North Carolina where they raised their only child, Marye Louise. Sam continued his career at the Naval Recruiting Office and retired in 1992. In 2003, with the birth of their grandson, Mason Stevens, they relocated to Wilmington, North Carolina.
Sam enjoyed many hobbies. He was an Amateur Radio Operator, call sign WB4ROC, and through this hobby assisted law enforcement and county emergency officials by providing emergency communication services. Most of all, Sam loved nature. He spent a lot of time on long nature walks and taking pictures and videos of all God's creations. Sam also loved spending time with everyone. He impacted many lives over the years with his 'Infinite Wisdom' and was know by many as "Mr. P" or "Grampy".

He leaves behind his Daughter, Marye Hewett; Son-In-Law, Tony Hewett; Grandsons, Mason Stevens and Justin Huffman; Granddaughter, Rebecca Hewett of Wilmington; Sister, Marilyn Parkerson Morgan and Husband Frank of Louisville, Mississippi; Brother, Russell Macon Parkerson and Wife Gail of Hattiesburg, Mississippi; Brother-In-Law, Jack Warner and Wife Kathy of Cosby, Tennessee. He is also survived by many cousins for whom he dearly loved and his favorite nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, October 26, 2014, at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel with the Rev. Phil Ortega officiating. The family will receive friends at the mortuary from 3:00 p.m. Sunday until the service hour.
