Alice King Mullis Dickens, age 85, went home to heaven on Saturday, October 25, 2014. Born in Charlotte, NC on November 5, 1928, she is the daughter of the late Mayhew Harold Mullis, Sr. and Mary Cornelia King. She was also preceded in death by her two sisters, Sara Page and Nancy McDowell; her three brothers, Harold Mullis, Jr., Leon Mullis and Bill Mullis, Sr.
She grew up in Columbia, SC, where she attended the University of South Carolina and where she met Jim, who was stationed at Fort Jackson. Later, after a short stint in Raleigh, they moved to Rocky Mount, where they have been since 1957, and where she flourished as a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was a faithful member of West Haven Presbyterian Church in Rocky Mount for nearly 60 years, and sang in the choir most of that time. Alice loved gardening, and was a member of the Rocky Mount Garden Club for many years. She also loved music, and was a supporter of the Tar River Orchestra and Chorus. She was inducted into the Daughters of the American Revolution and was a sustaining member of the Rocky Mount Junior Guild. She loved reading, working the newspaper puzzles, and spoiling her pets. Most of all, she loved participating in the events of her loved ones’ lives. Whether it was a high school football game, a dance or piano recital, a Girl Scout meeting, or a band trip or beach trip in need of a chaperone, she was there. Nana loved to “gather her chicks” and was most happy after she was sure they were well-taken care of. And she was always by Jim’s side, supporting him in all his endeavors. Her first love and greatest achievement is her family, who is grateful for all she has sacrificed for each of them. Her family expresses great appreciation for Pat Lovett and all of Alice’s other faithful caregivers.
Alice leaves behind her husband of 61 years, James Russell “Jim” Dickens, Sr.; her children, Carol Dickens Barker and her husband, Andy of Elm City, NC; Missy Dickens Pair and her husband, Grant of Raleigh, NC; and Rusty Dickens of Rocky Mount, NC; and a grand-daughter, Ana Catherine Dickens of Raleigh, NC. She will also be remembered by her sister-in-law, Biddie Mullis of Virginia Beach, VA, and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
