Sydney Burns Moffett passed away in Raleigh on or about October 19th, 2014. His parents, the late Rosalie and David F. Moffett were well-known local musicians, and Sydney’s musical talent became obvious when he began to study the violin as a child. He went on to complete high school at the N.C. School Of The Arts and earn a bachelor’s degree at the California Institute Of The Arts in 1975.
Sydney mastered every musical genre, from bluegrass to New Age and jazz to classical. He busked on Ghirardelli Square in San Francisco, played in the stage bands for several well-known Las Vegas vocalists, took part in many musical events around the city, and once stepped in at the last minute to substitute for an ailing soloist in a performance of Ferde Grofe’s Grand Canyon Suite with the North Carolina Symphony. He was a licensed airplane pilot and worked for some time as a chef. In recent years he retired to the family home in Raleigh to care for his elderly parents and ultimately to struggle with a chronic neurological condition.
Sydney is survived by two brothers, Darryl W. Moffett of Ocean Isle NC and David F. Moffett Jr. of Colton WA, and a sister Adrienne Gabriel of Shreveport LA; another brother, Jan B. Moffett passed away in 2002.
Cremation has taken place; a memorial will be held at a date to be announced.
