Renee Curtiss DuPont, 72 passed away on Sunday morning November 2, 2014 at her home in Durham, N.C. Born on April 29, 1942 in Meriden, Connecticut she was the daughter of the late George and Rene Curtiss and the wife of Sidney I. DuPont, PhD.
She is lovingly remembered by her sisters, Mrs. Robert (Carolyn) MacDuff of Meriden, CT and Mrs.Paul (Kathy) Akasie of Kensington, CT; her daughters Mrs. Richard (Nicole) Latimer II of Darnestown, MD and Mrs. William (Alicia) “Pokey” Schiff of Durham; and her grandchildren Riker and Selden Schiff and Richard III (Trip) and Harrison Latimer.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an older brother, Russell Curtiss.
She was a graduate of Maloney High School in Meriden and an honors graduate from Central Connecticut State University where she received both a B.S. and M.S. degree. A teacher at the elementary school level for thirty years, she taught in the Meriden, Middletown, Essex and Granby, Connecticut and the Wilmington, Vermont public schools. From 1982 through 2003, she taught independent school second graders at the Grosse Pointe Academy in Michigan and the Harbor Day School in Newport Beach, California before retiring to Durham. She and Sid celebrated their fiftieth anniversary this past May.
As a youngster, she was an award winning drum majorette and champion baton twirler, winning many titles in New York, New Jersey and New England. In her later years she enjoyed decorating, cooking, entertaining and the theater. A great joy for her was being with those four precious grandchildren during the holidays and with her during annual family beach trips to Bald Head Island.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday November 14, 2014 at 11:00 AM at the St.Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 82 Kimberly Drive, Durham, N.C. 27707. The family will receive friends at the Hope Valley Country Club on Dover Road following the service.
