Mary Elizabeth "Lib" Markham Pope, 96, died Wednesday November 5, 2014 at her apartment in Croasdaile Village Retirement Community. Mrs. Pope was born in Durham to the late William Joseph and Molly Hopson Markham of Durham. She graduated from Bethesda High School and received her BA in Education from Elon College. She married the late George Pope of Kenly, NC where she lived the majority of her adult life. She retired from teaching in the Johnston County Schools where she taught both elementary and high school for many years. Mrs. Pope returned to Durham in 2002. She was an avid bridge player and a talented artist.
Mrs. Pope is survived by her nephew, William (Bill) Colclough of Chapel Hill, her niece, Judy Holland, of Kenly, her great-nieces, Pamela Young of Garner and Susan Ashley of South Carolina and her great-nephews, Ray Tyndall of New Orleans, LA and Ken Tyndall of Orlando, Florida, and a special friend, Bob Craddock, of Croasdaile Village. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Texie Painter, Ellie Ruth Ferrell, Berta Rich, and Foy Lee Colclough, and her brother, Jesse Markham. Her niece, Janet Colclough Tyndall also preceded her in death.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 19, 2014 at Kenly Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. George Arant officiating. Memorial Contributions may be made to Kenly Missionary Baptist Church, 1730 Hwy 222 W., Kenly, NC 27542.
Cremation Arrangements are in the care of Minshew-Coley Funeral Home, Kenly, NC.
