Donald Ray Winstead, age 78, of Wilson’s Mills went home to be with his Lord on Saturday, November 15 at his home surrounded by his loving family after a 13 year struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. Born in Wilson County on June 16, 1936, he was the son of the late John Lindsey and Bena Lamb Winstead. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Donnette Winstead Carroll; brothers John, Theron, Elijah, and W.D.; and sisters Susan Joyner, Ruby Edwards, Esther Matthews, Pattie Greene and Naomi Petnay. Mr. Winstead was a US Army veteran and was retired from the maintenance department of Burlington Mills. He was a member of the Way of Life Baptist Church in Clayton.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 2:00 PM in the Way of Life Baptist Church with burial following in Knollwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends the Way of Life Baptist Church Thursday night from 6 to 8 PM.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Carolyn Godwin Winstead; his granddaughter Lily Carroll of Clayton; brothers David Winstead of Rocky Mount and Charles Winstead of Roanoke Rapids; sister Geneva Walker of Smyrna, TN; and special friends Jerome and Lisa Corley, Avery and Ashlin.
