Ethel Margaret Daniels longtime resident of Raleigh, NC and native of Reedville, VA passed away on November 20th in Garner, NC. Mrs. Daniels had just celebrated her 100th birthday this past spring.
A member of Raleigh’s Edenton Street Methodist Church, Ethel Daniels was a co-founder and great supporter of its Ruth Sheets Center which provides vital support and social services for seniors.
She was born March 22, 1914, the only daughter of Henry and Lucy McFarland. Ethel grew up in Reedville with her half-siblings Elizabeth and Paul Muir.
A strong woman, Ethel attended nursing school during the Great Depression, leaving only to marry her beloved James Walter Daniels, Jr. in 1934. He was the love of her life and his sudden and untimely passing at 59 was an extraordinary difficult time. Ethel’s faith and strength of conviction led her to adapt and build a full life again. She enjoyed friendships, family and her church. She also returned to nursing which continued for nearly two more decades.
Never miss a local story.
Ethel is survived by her two children, Barbara McCool of Cary NC and Southern Pines NC and Cynthia Daniels who lives in the family home in Reedville, VA. Ethel has seven grandchildren. Barbara's children are Amy Yarborough of Reidsville, NC, James McCool of Kenosha, WI, Lori Anne Henderson of Highland Park, IL, and Michael McCool of Colorado Springs, CO. Cynthia's children are Andrea Cole of New York, NY, Carolyn Fontana of Scotch Plains, NJ, and Marine Corporal John Scott Cole of Reedville, VA. She was justifiably proud of her 7 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren.
Services were held Saturday, November 29, 2014 at the Roseland Cemetery in Reedville.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ruth Sheets Center at the Edenton Street Methodist Church in Raleigh.
