George Szontagh passed away December 7, 2014, at the age of 95 after a period of declining health. He was born and raised in Budapest, Hungary, and survived the terrible siege of 1944-45 there as a civilian. He fled communist Hungary in 1949 and began a new life in Venezuela, where he married Madeleine Orban, and started a family. Relocating to New York in the early 1960’s, he was a stockbroker on Wall Street for many years, and eventually retired from the commercial plastics and construction industry. Madeleine and George relocated to Raleigh 20 years ago to be closer to family, for the milder climate and for golf.
George was an avid snow skier, tennis player, and golfer, kept up with domestic and world affairs, and spoke several languages. He was preceded in death by his wife Madeleine of 63 years and is survived by sons Paul and George, and grandsons Brian and Blair.
A family gathering of remembrance and celebration is planned in the spring. The family would like to thank the caring staff at Crabtree Rehabilitation and Elmcroft Assisted Living. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Wake Co. Hospice in his name.
