John Lee Massengill passed away to be with his Lord on December 21, 2014 at his home in Glenaire Retirement Home, Cary, North Carolina. He was born in Harnett County to the late Madison Lee Massengill and Evie Elizabeth Mills. John served his country with the North Carolina National Guard as a Master Sergeant for thirty years. He also served with the Atlantic and Pacific Food Stores as Market Manager for thirty years. After retirement, he owned Massengill Construction Company for fifteen years.
Memorial services will be at Glenaire Presbyterian Home, Cary, on January 2, 2015 at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at Glenaire.
John was a former member of the Elks Club and the Amram Shrine, and a member of the Masonic Lodge Hiram 40. He was an Elder, Deacon and Sunday School Teacher at Milner Memorial Presbyterian Church and presently a member of the Kirk of Kildaire Presbyterian Church in Cary, NC.
His favorite hobby was music and he excelled in playing many instruments, but primarily the guitar. He played throughout the area in many private organizations and churches. John and Joyce spent a lot of time in West Palm Beach, Emerald Isle at their home and at Cocoa Beach, FL.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce Phillips Bauer (Massengill) of forty-one years; daughters and sons-in-law Joan Lee and Rene Langford of Holly Springs, NC; Lynn and Mark Thorne of Raleigh; and sons and daughters-in-law Wayne and Amy Massengill of Fuquay, and Mark and Terri Massengill of Raleigh; stepson and wife Michael and Leslie Phillips of Raleigh and Ronald Phillips of New Orleans, LA. Grandchildren are Eric Langford, Susan Langford and husband, Michael Anderson, Brandon and Blake and wife, Heather Massengill; and step-grandchildren, Matthew Scott and Lee Anderson Phillips.
John has requested that memorial contributions be sent to The Presbyterian Foundation, Glenaire, 4000 Glenhope Circle, Cary, 27511, or to the Salvation Army, Raleigh, NC.
