Vernon Watson, 84, passed away peacefully Saturday January 17, 2015 under hospice care in Fayetteville, GA. Vernon, a native of Quitman, MS, was the son of the late John Turner Watson and Stella Ruth Jennings Watson. He graduated from his beloved Ole Miss with an undergraduate in 1954 and with a Master’s degree in 1956. He had a profound influence on many lives through his work as a social worker at Stonewall Jackson School. He dearly loved his children and his grandchildren, but more than anything, he loved his wife of 49 years, Sylvia. Vernon and Sylvia shared an active life with tennis being one of their favorite hobbies. Vernon and Sylvia also shared a love of music, specifically orchestral music and opera. Together they traveled Europe, Peru, Canada, and the United States, especially the National Parks. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 31, 2015 at 1:00 pm at Mint Hill Baptist Church, Mint Hill, NC. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall following the service. He is preceded in death by his wife, Sylvia Peck Watson. His survivors include his daughter, Nancy Capps and husband, Rusty of Mint Hill, NC; his son, Jon Watson and wife, Jennifer of Peachtree City, GA; and his grandchildren, Jamie, Rachel, Rebecca, Abbie, Jesse, Lydia, John, David and Joshua Capps, and Jack Watson.
