Charles graduated from Chapel Hill High School in 1944, enlisted in the Army and served as an infantry rifleman throughout Europe during WWII; he fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He returned to Chapel Hill in 1946 and enrolled in University of North Carolina. While hospitalized for appendicitis, he met a lovely nursing student named Thelma McBride, thus beginning a lifelong love affair. They married on October 25, 1947 and delighted in 62 years together until Thelma’s death in 2010. Their love, faithfulness, and devotion are a legacy that continues to inspire family and friends.
For 37 years he was employed by the United States Postal Service, retiring in 1982 as the Assistant Post Master. A motivated and hard-working man, Charles derived great joy from work, family and friends. Together with his father, brother, and sons, Charles provided automotive services to generations of satisfied customers through Holloway Motors and Eastgate Amoco. With burning curiosity and a joy of learning, he designed, built, and managed an apartment complex, was an avid gardener and, with his wife, belonged to several bridge clubs where he enjoyed the fellowship of many friends. Golfing with Frank Fearrington, his best friend from childhood, was a source of joy. He and his wife were lifelong members of the University Baptist Church.
Affectionately known as “Daddy Two” to his grandchildren, Charles was a man of gentleness, integrity and stability. He lived life and faced his death with grace, dignity and courage. Charles will be remembered for his humor, kindness and patriotism. He was generous in wisdom, devoted to his family and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
