Norwood Earl Worley, 87, passed away on February 4, 2015.
Born on January 22, 1928 near Princeton, NC, he was the son of the late Floyd Earl Worley and Fannie Thompson Worley. Mr. Worley taught in the Johnston County Schools from 1954-1957, was co-owner of Worley Brothers from 1957-1978, and owner and president of Worley Brothers from 1978-1995.
Mr. Worley graduated from Princeton High School before attending Campbell University where he received an AA Degree in 1952. He also attended Atlantic Christian College (now Barton College) and received a BA Degree in Mathematics in 1954. He also did graduate work at East Carolina University.
Mr. Worley was very active in local business and politics. He was the first Treasurer of the Smithfield Jaycees and a member of the Kiwanis Club for 35 years, serving as a Director. He was former Director and Merchants Committee Chairman of the Smithfield Chamber of Commerce, Past Commander and Vice-Commander of the American Legion Pou-Parrish Post 132, and recipient of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine in December 1995. Mr. Worley served on the Smithfield Town Council from 1970-1995 and was Mayor Pro- Tem from 1983-1987. He was elected Mayor of Smithfield in 1989, 1991 and 1993. Other memberships include the Executive Committee, Eastern North Carolina Municipal Council from 1993-1995, the Board of Directors, North Carolina League of Municipalities in 1995, Board of Trustees of Risk Management Services, North Carolina League of Municipalities in 1995, Board of Directors of the Ava Gardner Museum from 1989-1996, and member of the North Carolina Progress Board, 1996-1999.
In addition, Mr. Worley was a World War II Veteran, serving in the US Navy as Sonarman on the USS Lloyd Thomas, DD 764.
A memorial service will be conducted at 1:00 PM on Saturday, February 7, 2015 at First Presbyterian Church in Smithfield where he was a member, past Deacon and Elder, and Sunday School teacher. He also received Honorary Life Membership from the First Presbyterian Women of the Church. Following the memorial service, the family will receive friends at a reception held at the church.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Jean Creech Worley, sons Earl Worley of Warren, Ohio and Paul Worley and wife Tonya, of Smithfield, and two grandchildren, Adam Worley and Kate Worley.
