The Rev. Canon George Poffenbarger II died February 5, 2015 at 9:25 AM with his wife of 57 years and son Matthew and daughter Livia at his side. George was born March 26, 1930 in Charleston, West Virginia the son of Nathan and Harriet Poffenbarger. He is the grandson of Judge George and Livia Simpson Poffenbarger. He is a graduate of Ohio University and the Episcopal Seminary in Lexington, Kentucky. He is survived by his wife, Sandra Courtney Poffenbarger of Durham, NC; son, Matthew Poffenbarger of Portland OR; daughter Livia Poffenbarger Kelly of Franklin, NJ. Grandchildren, Scott Gunderman, Courtney Huyck, Anthony Carey, Derek Kelley, Noah Kelley and Nathan Kelley. Nephews, Ryan Courtney of South Port, NC, Christopher Mitchell of Tokyo, Japan and niece, Renae Courtney of Clarks Summit, PA.
George served various congregations in West Virginia, New Jersey and Michigan. He retired from his last Parish in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan in 1995 and moved to Hillsborough, NC. IN retirement he was active in the interim ministry serving several congregations in the Diocese of NC. He helped organize the Chaplains to the Retired Clergy and Clergy Spouses, Diocese of NC.
The funeral service will be held Saturday, February 7 at 2:00 PM at St. Matthew’s Church, 210 St. Mary’s Road, Hillsborough, NC. Following the service a celebration of life reception will be held in the parish hall. Memorials are requested to be sent to St. Matthew’s Church, PO Box 628, Hillsborough, NC 27278.
