Bonding With My Boys Over Bedtime Books
I will admit that there are times when I cringe at the boys' bedtime book choice and other times when I love every minute. My five year old, Donovan, loves Hotwheels cars and there have been nights when I have read him a number of chapters of his favorite Hotwheels book that only contains facts about the history of Hotwheels, including the make and description of various collectors models. Before I had boys I had little to zero appreciation of anything Hotwheels so imagine my surprise one night when I found myself being particularly excited to learn that there are actually life size versions of some of these cars and also a real live Hotwheels racing team, who knew?
A few years ago my son Cole and I read one of my childhood favorites, the Fudge Series by Judy Blume, and have enjoyed many a belly laugh reading Jeff Kinney's Diary of a Wimpy Kid series together. Cole was less excited about a book that I loved as a child by E.B. White, called The Trumpet of The Swan. The look on his face when I pulled that one out was likely similar to the look on mine when he chooses The Guinness Book of World Records for the hundredth time, although I do remember loving those books when I was a kid so can totally appreciate the attraction.
Another series that Cole, who is now nine, and I love is the Who Was Series of books. So far we have learned all about Dr. Suess, Walt Disney, Louis Armstrong, Amelia Earhart, Albert Einstein and Annie Oakley. Cole read the Who Was Walt Disney book on our way down to New Orleans over Christmas and I read it all by myself in bed one night when we returned - they are that interesting.
Never miss a local story.
On Martin Luther King Day, Donovan and I read an illustrated book for children called Let Freedom Sing, by Vanessa Newton , and now This Little Light of Mine is our favorite new song to sing together. He was so excited when they learned about Martin Luther King when they returned to school and he knew all about "King Luther jr." already.
Not sure what the bedtime books will be tonight but I do know that I am going to enjoy this time for as long as possible. Not only do I now know that I should definitely collect all of those Hotwheels, I also know the day will come when they aren't fighting to see who gets to read in bed with me first.
