In the early morning hours of, February 14, 2015, Charles Gilbert Hill was called Home to his eternal rest. He was greeted there by his parents, Louise M. and Gilbert S. Hill, his first wife of 30 years, Bonita R. “Pee-Wee” Hill, his brother Edwin M. Hill, and step-son Bob Massengill, along with numerous other family members and friends who preceded him in death.
“Chig”, as he was known to most, was born November 25, 1928, the fourth of five children, in Walnut Cove, NC, where he grew up. He served four years in the Air Force. He returned home to Walnut Cove, married in 1955, and raised two children. He was always active in his church, Stokesburg Methodist, worked many years with Boy Scout Troop 444 and served the Hanging Rock Council of the BSA for almost 40 years, served on the town board of Walnut Cove and the Stokes County Planning Board, and was a member of the W.C. Rotary Club. He worked for W.H.Sullivan Co. in Greensboro for 38 years before his retirement.
Several years after the death of his first wife in 1986, he met and married Hilda G. Massengill and they eventually moved to Cary. He was active in Westwood Baptist Church and greatly enjoyed volunteering at the Dorcas Shop. Throughout his adult life he enjoyed playing golf and was a loyal Tarheel fan. He always enjoyed a good joke, both the hearing and the retelling, and he enjoyed making people laugh. He was a great believer in giving back and supported many causes that he believed in and that touched his heart.
He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Hilda, one daughter Roseann of Emerald Isle, one son, Chuck and wife Denise, grandson Adam and wife Taylor, all of Greensboro, granddaughter Carly of Raleigh, step-son Bill Massengill and wife Debbie of Lafayette, Ind. and four step-grandchildren. Hill of Winston-Salem, sister and brother-in-law Danny Susan and David Daniels of Kinston and sister-in-law Audrey Rominger of Boone, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Never miss a local story.
