Harry Hodges Cummings, age 92, died peacefully at the North Carolina Veterans Home in Kinston on Sunday, February 15, 2015. A native of Kinston he was the son of Mr and Mrs Hugh McRae Cummings. He graduated from Grainger High School in 1939 and from NC State in 1948 enlisting in the army in October of 1942. As Corporal he served in the 78th Lightening division of the U.S. Army from December 9 1944 until January 18, 1946 during which time he received both the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star awards. After college graduation he married Eleanor Johnson Howard and returned to Kinston where he started Harry H. Cummings Construction Company. Harry loved his family, his friends, his Saturday golf game, Queen St Methodist Church, the Rotary Club and vacations at Atlantic Beach. He will be remembered for his humility, his generosity and his soft spoken manner.
He is survived by his loving family, Eleanor and Charles Beasley of Kinston, June and Harry Cummings of Kinston, Sharon and Howard Cummings of Raleigh and Kim and Kent Cummings also of Raleigh, his eleven grandchildren, Britt (Cori), Matt (Cathy), and Caroline Beasley, Trey (Kristen) Cummings, Blair (Brian) Wilson, Sally and Anna Cummings, Makena and Olivia Cummings, Elizabeth Riddick, Amanda (Brandon) Harrell and eight great grandchildren.
Harry was predeceased by his first wife Eleanor, his second wife Lee and his brother Hugh McRae Cummings of Burlington.
On Thursday at 11:00 a.m. Celebration of his Life will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 2102 Herritage Street in Kinston. Memorial contributions may also be made to the First Presbyterian Church.
