Nell Harrell Perry Squires, 92, formerly of Greenwood, widow of William H. Squires, Sr., died Saturday, February 14, 2015, at The Heritage at Lowman in White Rock, SC.
Born June 21, 1922, in Raleigh, NC, she was the daughter of the late George Oliver Harrell and Elizabeth Cheek Harrell Porter. She was predeceased by her first husband, Commodore Aubrey Perry, a beloved stepfather Edward Coleman Porter, and a brother, Dr. George Oliver Harrell. She graduated with honors from both Hugh Morson High School and Rex Hospital of Nursing in Raleigh, NC.
A registered nurse for over forty years, Nell served as the first nurse-recruiter for Lander College, taught in their nursing program, and became the first in-service education instructor at Self Memorial Hospital. She was part of the initiatives for St. Nicholas Speech and Hearing Center, the Hospice Program of Greenwood, and the Visiting Nurses Association of Greenwood. After training at Emory University, she became the first interstomal therapist in SC and was active in promoting the International Association for Interstomal Therapy. She was honored in 1984 by the SC Nursing Association’s Excellence in Practice Award and in 1993 by the Greenwood Sertoma Club’s Service to Mankind Award. Nell continued in Self Memorial’s rehabilitative program until her retirement.
As an active member of the Greenwood Episcopal Church of the Resurrection, she served as a member of the Vestry and president of the Women of the Church. She was also a member of the Keowee Study Club and a certified Master Gardner with the Ivy Garden Club.

Surviving are four children, Ronald L. Perry (Sandy) of Trenton, SC; Donald C. Perry of Raleigh, NC; Janet E. Perry of Columbia, SC; Nelson “Skipper” Perry of Dover, NH; four stepchildren, William H. Squires, Jr. (Margaret) of Herndon, VA; Harold “Tappy” Squires (Patsy) of Monroe, GA; Laura Ann Bierly (Robert “Bud”) of Bogart, GA; Cornelia “Connie” Squires Decker ( the late Pete) of Mauldin, SC; five grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren, and twelve step-great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Friday at 12:30 in Emmaus Hall at the Church of the Resurrection followed by a 2:00 burial service in the sanctuary. Family graveside service at 3:00 will be at Edgewood Cemetery.
