Donald Thero “Don” Barefoot, 72, of Reidsville, NC died Monday February 23, 2015 at Duke University Hospital Durham, NC.
Funeral service will be conducted 11:00 A.M. Thursday February 26, 2015 at First Presbyterian Church in Reidsville, NC. The family will see friends 10:00 till 11:00 A.M. before the service in the Boyd Room of First Presbyterian Church. Burial with military rites will be held in Greenwood Cemetery Dunn, NC at 3:30 P.M. Thursday February 26, 2015 with a reception to follow at First Baptist Church in Dunn.
Don was born in Dunn, NC to the late Thero and Lillie Byrd Barefoot . He graduated from Dunn High School and attended Campbell University and Atlantic Christian College. After serving two years in the U.S. Army, Don joined USF&G Insurance Company as an adjuster in Raleigh. He was transferred to Greensboro, NC and married the former Paulette Drew in 1968. They moved to Reidsville, NC in 1971. Don continued his insurance career purchasing the Grady Gregory, Pink M. Hooper, and Powell Agencies forming the Powell-Barefoot Agency of which he is President. Don was very active in the community including the Reidsville Jaycees, fundraising for the Rams Booster Club, and the Reidsville Elks Club Lodge # 1723. A member, Elder, and former chairman of the finance committee of First Presbyterian Church of Reidsville, he was an avid fisherman and hunter. Don loved to cheer for the Tarheels and Catamounts and especially enjoyed cooking and feeding anyone at any time.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, his brother: William T. Barefoot, nephew: Charles T. Hodges, and a brother-in-law: Pete Hodges. He is survived by his wife of 46 years: Paulette Drew Barefoot of the home, son: Paul Drew Barefoot of Reidsville, NC, daughter: Kelly Leigh Barefoot of Raleigh, NC, sister: Elease B. Hodges of Dunn, NC, brother: Andy M. Barefoot and wife Helen of Wendell, NC, sister-in-law: Carol Barefoot of Raleigh, NC, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
