Harriet Koenig (née Marks) died on February 23, 2015 at Rex Hospital in Raleigh, North Carolina at the age of 92. She had been a resident at Verra Spring’s assisted living facility.
Harriet is survived by her son Richard and daughter-in-law Cathy Koenig; daughter-in-law Caroline Koenig-Molinaro; grandchildren Christine (Koenig) and Lou Ottrando; Lauren (Koenig) and Frank Rowley; Rebecca, Michael, and Daniel Koenig; great-grandchildren Kendall and Glenna Rowley ad Leo Ottrando. She is preceded in death by her husband Leo Sand Koenig, and her son Leo Sand Koenig.
Harriet was born on January 12, 1923 in Newark, New Jersey, and was the adopted daughter of Samuel and Rose Marks. During the Great Depression, after the death of her father, she was sent to the Masonic Children’s Home in Utica, New York and attended Utica Free Academy. She married Leo Koenig in 1944. During his deployment in World War II she worked for the American Red Cross.
Harriet worked as a secretary in the English department of C. W. Post College, Long Island University (now LIU Post) from 1973 to 1988. She studied Fine Arts, and graduated with an Associate’s Degree in 1983.

Harriet retired in 1988 and moved to Wilmington, North Carolina. She was widowed in 1990, but continued to have an active social life, and enjoyed regular visits from family and friends. She was an accomplished artist, and often won prizes for her sketches at local art shows. She was very proud of all her children and grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at a future date at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, where she will be interred with her husband, Leo.
