The Reverend Waymon Edward Pritchard, 87, of Jacksonville, NC, passed away peacefully at his home on March 19th, 2015 surrounded by family after a struggle with Alzheimer’s’ disease. A Celebration of His Life will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, 21st March, 2015 at Enon Chapel Baptist Church with Rev. Jim Kelley officiating. Interment will follow at Onslow Memorial Park.
Rev. Pritchard was born in Hartwell, Georgia, to the late Rufus and Flora Johnson Pritchard. On July 7, 1950, he married his mountain sweetheart, Dorothy (Dot) Lee Romine, of Asheville, North Carolina. Their 64 year union produced three children, seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Rev. Pritchard graduated from Bob Jones University and quickly began a life of Christian service ministering to what he referred to as “the down and out.” He served at Bridgeport Christian Union Goodwill Industries in Bridgeport, Connecticut, the Greenville Rescue Mission in Greenville, South Carolina, and the Atlanta Union Mission in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1961 he felt that God was leading him to Raleigh, North Carolina, to start the Raleigh Rescue Mission. The Mission became a productive ministry and today still serves the “the down and out” in the Greater Raleigh area. You may visit the Mission website at www.raleighrescuemission.org.
Rev. Pritchard and Dot retired to their Emerald Isle beach home in 1996. He continued to serve in advisory roles as an interim director of rescue missions in Alabama, Washington and his home state of North Carolina. In recent years they moved to Jacksonville to live with their eldest son, Tom, and his wife, Jacqui.
Rev. Pritchard is survived by his wife, Dorothy Lee, and two sons and one daughter and their spouses, Tom and Jacqui Pritchard of Jacksonville, Terry and Nita Pritchard of Raleigh, and Cheryl and Gordon Gay of Garner. Also surviving are two sisters, Bonnie Denson of Cazenovia, NY, and Mary Haynes of Hudson, NC. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, George Pritchard of Asheville, Joe Vaughn of Asheville and his sister, Rachel Gathany of Toccoa Falls, Georgia.
He is also survived by his grandchildren: Adria Pritchard Doll, Joanna Pritchard Sacco, Miles Pritchard, Drew McLeod, Michael Swanson, Brian Swanson, Stephen Swanson; and his great grandchildren: Emily, Samuel, and Lucas Swanson, Braeden and Evan Swanson, Isaiah and Natalie Sacco.
A visitation will be held at Jones Funeral Home (303 Chaney Avenue Jacksonville, NC 28540), Friday 20th March, 2015 at 6:00 till 8:00 PM.
The family honors Rev. Pritchard with the following quote and scripture: “The battle’s not mine, it’s the Lord’s.” “… Inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these, my brethren, you did it to Me.“ Matthew 25: 40b ( NKJV). “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10 (NKJV)
