William (Bill) G. Pitts, 88, passed away March 25, 2015 following a difficult recovery from surgery. Raised in Spring Hope, NC, he served in the Army during WWII and graduated from UNC Chapel Hill. He spent most of his career in the banking industry with First Citizens Bank and retired from NCNB. He was predeceased by his parents William P. and Kathleen G. Pitts, his wife Elizabeth M. Smith Pitts and his younger brother Jack W. Pitts. He is survived by step-sons (whom he always treated as sons) Mark D. Smith and his wife Alice and Scott M. Smith and his wife Lori and their daughters, Stephanie and Allison. He entered our lives nearly 50 years ago and was a good husband and family provider. More importantly, he was there without waiver during our mother’s battle with cancer. He and our mother enjoyed dancing, traveling (including Norway, Greece and the Panama Canal) and spending time with family and friends. He also enjoyed the game of golf, including one of its finest moments by recording a hole in one. And it goes without saying that he was a true blue Tarheel.
A memorial service will be held April 11 at 3:00 at the Gibson Memorial United Methodist Church in Spring Hope, NC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bill’s memory to Gibson Memorial United Methodist Church in Spring Hope, NC, The American Cancer Society or to the charity of your choice.
