Lillie Rae Smith Rodwell, 88, of the Moss Hill community, passed away Wednesday, March 25, 2015 at her home. Lillie Rae, the oldest of four children, was born November 18, 1926 to Ronald and Selma Smith of the Moss Hill community. Lillie Rae graduated from Moss Hill School and UNC-Greensboro. She worked with the Lenoir County Clerk Of Superior Court, the Lenoir County Auditor’s Office and then embarked on a teaching career. Lillie Rae taught at Seven Springs, Contentnea and Moss Hill. Lillie Rae grew up in Holy Innocents Episcopal Church and later became a member of Union Baptist Church. She served her church as treasurer and taught the Adult Sunday School Class for many years. A lady of quiet grace and dignity, Lillie Rae enjoyed time spent in her Bible, writing a handwritten note and bird watching. She loved yellow roses. Her faith in Jesus and concern for others was exhibited in all she did.
A service to celebrate and honor Lillie Rae’s life will be held Friday, March 27, 2015 at 11 a.m. from Union Baptist Church with Dr. Aubrey Jones officiating. Interment will follow at Holy Innoncents Episcopal Church Cemetery.
Lillie Rae cherished her family and is survived by her husband of sixty four years, Elmer C. Rodwell; three children, Kelly Rodwell Townson and husband, Tom, Coleman Rodwell and wife, Donna and Chris Rodwell and wife, Susan; five grandchildren, Jacob Townson and wife, Jessica, Daniel Townson and wife, Angy, Kate T. Bunn and husband, Dr. Bryan Bunn, Morgan Rodwell and Zac Rodwell; three great-grandchildren, Sam, Ivy and Aria Townson; sister, Lou Ella Vause; and a brother, W.R. "Billy" Smith, Jr. In addition to her parents, Lillie Rae was preceded in death by a brother, T.C. Smith.
Lillie Rae’s family will receive friends Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at Rouse Funeral Home, La Grange.
