Mildred Fields Johnson passed away on Wednesday March 25, 2015. Mildred was born in Carthage, NC on November 4, 1921 to the late William Neil Fields and Mae Cameron Fields. Besides her son and parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Fentress R. Johnson; brothers, Charles Fields and James Fields; and a sister, Katherine Fields Averitt.
Mildred grew up in Sanford, NC, then her and her husband moved to Rocky Mount, because of her husband’s employment with Atlantic Coast Line Railroad.
Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Caroline Johnson McCall and her husband Earl McCall, Sr. of Battleboro; her grandson, Earl McCall, Jr. of Nashville, NC; a sister, Margaret Hackney of New Bern, NC.; and a sister in law, Beatrice Fields of Sanford, NC. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Her son, Sgt. 1st Class Darrell Johnson has been missing in action from the Vietnam War since January 19, 1968. With the loss of her beloved son Darrell, she began a lifelong mission advocating on behalf of POW’s and MIA’s. Mildred was a co-founder of the National League of Families of POW’s/MIA’s and dedicated her life on behalf of American Military Personnel captured or missing in action and their families. She traveled the country raising awareness and challenging politicians to never forget those separated from their country while in military service. Mildred has been relentless in her quest for answers.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, March 29, 2015 at 3:00 PM at the Chapel of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home & Cremation Services with Rev. Todd Allen officiating. Burial will follow at Rocky Mount Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 1:30 to 3:00pm prior to the service and other times at the home. Mildred’s request was that all team members and coaches of the Rocky Mount Blackbirds teams to serve as honorary pallbearers.
