Larry Green Jorgensen, beloved son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully in his home on Friday, April 3, 2015. Larry was born in Eugene, Oregon on September 18, 1936 to wonderful parents, Nephi Moroni Jorgensen and Martha Jane Green Jorgensen. Larry met his future wife, Ella Gray Sullivan, in class at East Carolina College. Larry observed that he knew the minute he saw her that she was the girl he wanted to marry. They were married in Goldsboro on July 23, 1961. Three weeks later, they were sealed for all time and eternity in the Idaho Falls, Idaho temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on August 11, 1961.
In 1960, Larry received a Bachelor of Science degree from East Carolina College. Four years later, he graduated from the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry as a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS). He then served as a Captain in the United States Air Force. Upon his honorable discharge, he returned to North Carolina, where he raised his family, practiced dentistry, and served in the community, initially in Greenville and, from 1970 to the present, in Jacksonville.
Larry was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. As a young man, he served a two and one-half-year full-time mission in Northern Mexico. He subsequently served in many other capacities, including multiple times as a Bishop presiding over the local congregation in Jacksonville, as a Counselor in the Presidency of the Wilmington Stake, as a Counselor in the North Carolina Raleigh Mission, and for ten years immediately preceding his passing, as the Patriarch of the Wilmington Stake. He lived his testimony in word and deed. Larry’s selfless service and his faithful example touched the hearts of those he served.
Larry’s greatest successes were in the home. He was independent, but always acted in tandem with the love of his life and wife of 53 years, Ella Gray Sullivan Jorgensen. He loved being a husband, a father, and a grandfather. He found his greatest fulfillment when with his family.
Never miss a local story.
