Emily Lacey McGregor, beloved aunt and sister, died April 12, 2015.
She was born to Beth A. Lacey and Joseph E. Lacey on April 19, 1928 in Huntingdon, New York. At sixteen, she got on a train to travel to Boston to attend Radcliffe College, and that was the beginning of her life of adventure. She lived in China as a young woman, and then New York, San Francisco, Bennington, VT., and Boston, and made friends wherever she was. When she retired from Harvard in the 1980’s, she moved to N.C. to be closer to family. She had many wonderful years living in Chapel Hill, and contributed enthusiastically to her new home town.
In 2012, she made one final move, to Shelby N.C. to live with her brother and his wife.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and her much-loved older brother, Joe Lacey, Jr., of Montgomery, Alabama. Surviving are her brother, Morris Lacey and his wife, Mabel, of Shelby, N.C.; her nieces, Anne Lacey and her family of Durham, N.C., Caroline Lacey and her family of Olympia, WA, and Margaret Murphy and her family of Montgomery, AL; and her nephews, Chuck Lampley and his family of Shelby, N.C., and Mark Lampley and his family of Knoxville, TN, all of whom she loved dearly.
Emily traveled extensively, read voraciously, especially the N.Y. Times, and loved deeply. She will be missed always.
Gifts in her memory may be made to the Orange County Animal Shelter at 1601 Eubanks Road, Chapel Hill NC 27516.
