Mona Mae Allen Massengill departed her earthly life on Monday, April 20, 2015 at the SECU Hospice House, Smithfield.
In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. John 14:2 (KJV)
Mona was born in Raleigh, NC on August 5, 1932. She was predeceased by her parents: Charles D. Allen (1908-1967) and Fannie Casey Allen (1908-1984). She married Landon D. Massengill on 1984 and was happily married to him until his death on February 2, 2009. Mona was a beloved step-mother to Landon’s daughter, Tammy M. Honeycutt (1962-1988).
Mona graduated from Smithfield High School and also graduated from Campbell College with a Secretarial Degree. She was devoted to her work as a secretary and clerk with the Jewel Box in Smithfield for 54 years.
Mona could be considered a “patron saint” of cats. She and her beloved mother raised many kittens and cats over their lifetimes. Many people in her community knew she was a caregiver to cats and on one occasion someone left a box on her front porch with a mother cat with baby kittens. Mona and her mother never turned away an unwanted cat or kitten and nursed many sick animals back to health.
Survivors left to mourn Mona’s death include her brother-in-law, Luther R. Massengill (Wanda Jean) and her sister-in-law, Kay M. Johnson (Jerry) and a number of cousins.
A graveside service will be conducted at the Casey Cemetery, Casey Road, Clayton at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 23, 2015 with the Rev. Billy Nowell officiating.
