Francis X. Stankard, Age 83, of Raleigh, NC, highly respected family man and business leader died on April 23rd at The Rosewood Care Facility of the Cypress Club of Raleigh after a long illness. He was the husband of Elsa Hoffmann Stankard to whom he had been married 55 years. Born in Hewlett, NY he was the son of the late John and Margaret Stankard. After spending 37 years in Middletown, NJ he retired to Chapel Hill, NC. Mr. Stankard graduated from College of the Holy Cross in 1953, the Brookings Institute in Washington, D.C., and the Senior International Managers Program at Harvard University. After college, Mr. Stankard spent three years serving in the United States Marine Corps, earning the rank of Captain and continuing to serve in the reserves. He worked for Chase Manhattan Bank in New York for 35 years including 12 years as Executive Vice President of International Banking. He also served as Vice Chairman of American Express Bank from 1994 to 1999. Mr. Stankard was well known and respected for his significant dedication and service on many Boards including Bank Leumi, Bankers Life Insurance of NY, American Express Bank, Netherlands Bank of Holland, Asia Society, Japan Society, Council of the United States and Italy where he served as Board President, Christian Brothers Academy, United States National Advisory Board of INSEAD and Executive in Residence of Monmouth College. Of his extensive philanthropic efforts, his greatest pride was in service to his Alma Mater, College of the Holy Cross and his role as a Knight of Malta both in Rome and New York. Mr. Stankard received the highly prestigious In Hoc Signo Award in 2014 in celebration of his 60 years of extensive volunteer service including Trustee from 1984 to 1992, presiding as National Chair for the Holy Cross Fund from 1980 to 1983, and his membership in the Fitton, Fenwick and Cornerstone Societies, among other contributions. Four other memberships that brought Mr. Stankard much joy included The Council on Foreign Relations, the Knickerbocker Club, Navesink Country Club and Governors Club. Always an active community and church member and dedicated family man, Mr. Stankard is survived by his loving wife Elsa and their three sons. His oldest son, Charles, lives in Orange Park, FL with his wife Heather and their four children Matthew, Sarah, William and Samuel. His middle son, Peter, lives in Austin, TX with his wife Jennifer and sons Ryan and Michael. His youngest son, John lives in Westwood, MA, with his wife Marcia and their three children, Alexandra, Johnny, and Robert. Mr. Stankard is also survived by his two sisters, Lillian Ford and Barbara Fitzpatrick, and their families, both from West Islip, NY.
To honor Mr. Stankard’s wishes, an intimate family mass of remembrance will be held at the College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, MA.
