Haircuts to help Habitat

In this section of the paper, our goal is to help you as you turn your house into a home with stories about decorating the interior and turning your plot of land into a nice garden. However, some people in our community cannot afford their own homes. Today we're going to tell you about an event on Thursday at which you can join Lather Hair Salon and Habitat for Humanity in helping people who need a home.

Lather Hair Salon, off Glenwood Avenue in Raleigh, is sponsoring a Cut-a-Thon from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The salon will donate the usual payment for every haircut done that day to Habitat/Wake. Lather's prices are $38-$50 for women's cuts, $22-$31 for men's and $18-$26 for children 10 and younger. (Stylists' tips are not included.)

The money Lather raises will help sponsor Habitat/Wake's 2009 Holiday Home Tour and Party on Nov. 22. The tour is itself a fundraiser for Habitat Wake, and Habitat's mission is to build affordable homes for low-income families.

Lather is at 8521 Cantilever Way, Suite 109, in Raleigh. For more information on Lather Hair Salon, visit www.latherhairsalonnc.com. For more information on Habitat for Humanity of Wake County, visit www.habitatwake.org.

Crochet for charity

Knitters and crocheters, here's a way for you to help others. Tuesday is knit night at the Cameron Village Regional Library, 1930 Clark Ave., Raleigh. On this night, knitters and crocheters gather to create items for charity. If you can't make it this time, mark your calendar for future second Wednesday nights of the month. (The date was changed this month because of Veterans Day.) Meet from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in Room 202A at the library. For more information call 856-6703 or send e-mail to sue.scott@wakegov.com

Make a bow, then take a bow

We can't believe it either. But, yes, the holidays are right around the corner. Learn how to make elegant bows for decorating greenery, swags and wreaths at a class at Sarah P. Duke Gardens. The class is 2 to 4 p.m. Nov. 19 at the Doris Duke Center at the gardens.

The fee is $15 for friends, $25 for the public. Get more information at 668-1707 or sarahpdukegardens.org.

Saved: 700 species and counting

The N.C. Botanical Garden will host a free public lecture Wednesday in honor of the 25th anniversary of the founding of the Center for Plant Conservation. The lecture by the center's director, Kathryn Kennedy, will describe the approach and accomplishments of the center, which so far has protected more than 700 species. The evening will also include a panel discussion about endangered plants in North Carolina, an overview of the Plant Conservation Program in the N.C. Department of Agriculture, and a brief introduction to the N.C. Botanical Garden. The lecture is at 7:30 in the Reeves Auditorium of the Botanical Garden's new Education Center. The Botanical Garden is off Fordham Boulevard at Old Mason Farm Road in Chapel Hill. Get more information at ncbg.unc.edu.

What's your eco status?

Are you eco-chic or eco-oblivious? That's the question from furniture supplier Hickory Springs as it seeks contestants for its EarthCareChallenge, in which it will follow six contestants as they try to live more sustainable lifestyles. The contest will be conducted using social media such as Facebook and YouTube. The grand prize winner will receive a $5,000 earth-friendly home furnishing makeover.

You have until Nov. 15 to enter. You can go to Facebook and submit a photo and a paragraph that explains why you are "eco-oblivious" and want to live a more sustainable/green lifestyle. Or you can post a video to Facebook or YouTube that shows how you're eco-chic or eco-oblivious.

The folks at Hickory Springs will narrow these entries to six regional finalists who will continue in the competition. For more complete rules, go to www.earthcareinside.com/challenge.html.
