In a blink and you'll miss it' spot in upstate New York, solace for the body and soul

AURORA, N.Y. - The sun is setting over the silvery waters of Lake Cayuga in upstate New York, and from the rocking chair on my private balcony at the Aurora Inn, I sip a glass of wine from the vineyard I visited just a few hours ago. Geese gathering at the lakeside honk every now and then, breaking the quiet. Life, I think, is very, very good.

Before moving in together, 5 must do money moves

You're in love. You're spending every night together. Except for paying on two different apartments, you are practically living together. So you ask yourself, "Why not just take the next step?" According to a 2000 study published in the Annual Review of Sociology, 55 percent of all cohabitating couples got married in five years' time, and the other 40 percent broke up. And of course, those who got married faced the same divorce statistics as other couple. Every couple who lives together is taking certain risks legal and financial and emotional. But you can protect yourself, no matter what happens.

Where to reflect on Sept. 11 in New York City

NEW YORK - The site of the worst act of terrorism on U.S. soil stands shielded from view behind a chain-link fence covered in banners. Towering cranes and other construction equipment are all that can be seen where the World Trade Center once stood.

Spend a cozy, homey day in Edmonds, a charming ferry-dock town north of Seattle

EDMONDS, Wash. - When I was growing up there circa 1960, Edmonds was a quintessential American small town. Within about three blocks we had a bakery, a variety store, a soda fountain, a hardware store and the Princess movie theater, where a Saturday double bill cost 10 cents. One of the great pleasures of returning as an adult is how many of the historic buildings remain and how protective residents are of its now charming and largely intact downtown.
