P
aul Cezanne had Provence. Vincent van Gogh had Arles, and Georgia O'Keeffe the American Southwest. Claude Monet found endless fascination in the seaside towns and rural fields of Normandy.

From the coastal village of Honfleur to the cliffs at Etretat, Normandy inspired Monet's bold experiments with atmosphere and light. He rendered grain stacks and poplars and the Gothic cathedral at Rouen. He cultivated gardens at Giverny that became a working laboratory for color. In Normandy, he created works that made him the leading light of impressionism, the 19th-century art revolution that changed the way painters reflected the world.

The region defined Monet's career. In turn, his body of work defines Normandy in ways that survive wars and eight decades of progress. This special section reflects his domain through the lens of a camera and the prism of time.
