Carl Nordt

Poetry: Cal Nordt graduated from Yale University in 1972, where his studies concentrated in creative writing. After graduating, he found himself in a 25-year trucking industry career. He is now semiretired and revisiting his love for writing. This poem was chosen by his favorite contemporary poet, Dorianne Laux, as a finalist in the 2007 N.C. State University Poetry Contest (http://english.chass.ncsu.edu/creativewriting/poetrycontest.html).

Here at Read, we like to see the expansion of arts in all venues. The Raleigh Quarterly is such a venture, providing an outlet for local visual and literary artists. Here's the word from its founders:

In an age of performance-enhancing drugs, think of The Raleigh Quarterly as something similar but better -- a mind-opening, muscle-building injection of creativity. The Raleigh Quarterly (www.raleighquarterly.com) is a new online creative magazine dedicated to promoting great work and big ideas, growing the careers of new and established artists and advancing our region's reputation as a hub of dynamic thinking and doing. The RQ's second edition is due later this summer, and more live events are on the way. Submissions, ideas and volunteers are always welcome at www.raleighquarterly.com.

Physics

I'm still frustrated by

gravity --

things falling

down.

But I'm OK with entropy

now.

And I'm OK with the arrow

of time.

If the arrow suddenly

switched --

and it all headed crunch-ward

(galaxies, the universe, etcetera)

and the shattered glass really did

jump

back from the floor

up on the counter,

whole,

I'd be perplexed -- liking

the one change, but maybe not

the other.

You can't have

everything

your

way.
