‘I like throwing up the dough and catching it,” says Ali Dawson, 15, left, as she and Meredith Allen, 14, knead dough for pizzas at the C’est Si Bon Cooking School for the weeklong Kid Chefs Summer Camp in Chapel Hill. The advanced level campers learn how to prepare a variety of foods while becoming acquainted with new kitchen equipment and food presentation. Many of the campers enjoy the opportunity to have free rein in the kitchen. “Well, I really like to cook and here you get a little bit more freedom. You can cook without a recipe, so it’s more fun and you’re not so burdened by having an adult look over your shoulder all day,” says Katey Matthews, 14, who is not pictured. In addition to the cooking experience, the camp encourages leadership and teamwork. “We’re learning how to be respectful for, like, other people’s property and how to share and if you have an ingredient but need someone else’s ingredient, how to like trade,” says Ali, who wanted to attend the camp because she “loves to cook and thought it would be a good experience.” To learn more about the camp, go to www.cestsibon.net.
