Taryn Hall, 6, playing with her 3-year-old brother, Tanner Hall, right, and their mother, Gina Chamberlain, proves that children can bounce back from just about anything. Four and a half years ago, Gina was driving towards a bridge over Middle Creek with her three daughters - Toni, Taylor and Taryn - and a boy she was babysitting, when the car went into a skid on the rain-slicked pavement and flipped over into the freezing water. "Taryn and I were the only ones to survive the accident," Gina says softly. Taryn lacked a pulse when she was pulled from the water, and her skin was cold to the touch, but she made an amazing and quick recovery. Today, playing at Tucker Lake in Benson, NC, Taryn is bright-eyed and vivacious. "I love the water!" she yells, slapping a handfull of it at her brother. When asked about her older sisters, however, Taryn speaks with the serious tone of someone far beyond her years. "For my birthday I want to go to Heaven and have a party with my sisters," she says. "God won't mind; he'll let me come right back."

The column is a celebration of the struggles, triumphs and tears we experience as we travel from birth to death. Our goal was to document moments in time that might otherwise be missed; sometimes it's the tiniest incident in one's life that has the most profound effect. When on assignment for the column, we looked for that one photo that tells a whole story. Some are the result of a found moment we came across on our daily assignments or our daily existence. For others, we thought of a specific event, like a first haircut or last dance, and sought out a subject who might illustrate the idea.
